The point is not, he said, whether or not you would 'win' the debate. Winning is not what the creationists realistically aspire to. For them, it is sufficient that the debate happens at all. They need the publicity. We don't. To the gullible public which is their natural constituency, it is enough that their man is seen sharing a platform with a real scientist. "There must be something in creationism, or Dr So-and-So would not have agreed to debate it on equal terms."

It is so much easier to hold a position if you refuse to discuss it in a public forum where you must defend your position. Besides, Dawkins makes too much money promulgating atheism to risk a serious discussion.

But there is nothing to defend against. Creationists don't have arguments, they simply use simulated debating to convey the illusion of rationality. All they do, in effect, is repeat, over and over again, that they refuse to give up their beliefs.

If they want to hang on to their beliefs, so what? If engaging them in debate makes them look legitimate in their own eyes, or in the eyes of others, so what? On the other hand, if the notion that some people do not accept their ideas is so troubling to them that they are compelled to have their ideas taught as though they stand up to the same kind of scientific scrutiny that the theory of evolution has received, then that is a problem.

I liked Dawkins augument and I can understand it. He is obvously attacked by the crazies. I left an advertizement about newsvine, possibly Richard may be tempted to join newsvine as his@!$%# was about university debate and not on line debate. The proof is given by the fact there is open comment debates on his web site. He obvously at least reads the comments.

Well, Christopher Hitchens certainly isn't afraid of the debate ;)
That should be interesting. He's not to everyone's taste but he'll certainly rattle the Creationist cage

While I understand his sentiment, I really don't agree with it. The way to grow idiots is much the same as growing mushrooms. Feed them bull@!$%# and keep them in the dark. Failing to point out what's wrong with creationism is in a way being complicit in keeping people in the dark.
Creationism isn't going to go away just because people don't address its follies.
In fact, failing to do so is more like giving creationists a blank slate to declare they've already won the debate.
